START YOUR OWN SWAP MEET BUSINESS
Where to Get Great Wholesale Products

One of the most challenging aspects of starting a new business is choosing a product the public wants to buy. Once you think you've found it, you as a seller want to spend as little as possible to get it. There are many resources available to locate inexpensive wholesale products.

A great place to find free material which you can browse at your leisure is at your local library. Resources vary according to the branch, so it's a good idea to call ahead if you have something specific in mind. The downtown branch of the San Diego Public Library has a complete reference library of domestic and international wholesale guides and directories. You'll find them in the business and social sciences section on the third floor.

Close-outs are HOT swap meet items. The Closeout Sources Directory lists all types of suppliers of merchandise at bargain prices. It includes information on how to buy overstock items, irregulars, and seconds. The USA Wholesale Sources Directory is a 63-page, fully illustrated guide which lists hundreds of suppliers. The guide lists state side importers, manufacturers and wholesalers who sell products in small or large lots.

There are also many international wholesale buying guides available including the Mexico Trade Directory, Philippine Trade Directory, Hong Kong Trade Directory, Orient Trade Directory and the Taiwan Trade Directory.

These, and those mentioned above, are only $15 each and are available on the website: www.bookservices.com.

When you walk into Kobey's corporate office you'll find publications specifically geared towards supplying swap meet vendors. Western Merchandiser/El Comerciante and Wholesale Merchandise contain hundreds of ads describing where to get the latest products for sale including jewelry, housewares, sunglasses, art, clothing and many novelty items. If you can think of it, it's probably in one of these merchandise buying guides. In addition, Western Merchandiser/El Comerciante, is produced in both English and Spanish offering information on retail trends and hot new products.

Wholesale Merchandise is online at: www.thewholesalemerchandise.com or call 800-600-7040. Western Merchandiser/El Comerciante is online at www.wholesalecentral.com or call 800-999-8281 x109.

We hope these buying resource suggestions get you on your way. In a future issue we’ll offer sellers more valuable resources.
